DP's Not Thinking??

Post by Tang »

I went downstairs to get bloodworms from the freezer, and when I came back up one of my 2 DP's was stuck to the filter halfway sticking through the holes in the bottom of the tube!!!! I quickly shut the filter off and he swam out... I have an aquaclear 20 and i dont have it fully turned up. I'm guessing they are just swimming too close and cant get away from the current? It shouldnt be sucking that powerfully. What do you guys suggest I do? Should I buy one of those sponges that go over the filter tube? I don't wanna lose anymore of them!!!!! :scared:

I have filter floss over my intake.

That stopped them from getting in there, but I also have a breeder net and I lost 1 today to that trap.

They are just overly curious...

I have 1 that constantly hangs out at the intake because the shrimp go there. Yea.. you have to cover your plumbing.

Replace the filter floss weekly or then the filter starts to dribble.

Keep an eye on the guy that got caught.. the stress may cause secondary infections like fin rot.

I use the FilterMax line as prefilters for intakes. Just pop the filter sponge off once a week for rinsing - tap water is fine, you do not need or want bacteria there anyway.

I use marineland replacement filter intakes on tanks for small fish lately. The pointed shape of the aquaclear filters takes in more debris, but the large basket distributes the force of the intake pulling water over such a large area even baby DPs can get away after bumping into it.
