Request for an article

Post by purplecandle »

I would like to request an article or at least a page of pictures that would describe common health concerns of puffers. You would not have to give medical advice, just a description of the disorder/injury

When we have sick puffers, and try to search the net we only get pictures of scaled fish and not puffer fish. Disorders and diseases may manifest differently in puffers because they are scaleless so we cannot know for sure what a typical disorder/injury would look like in a puffer.

PP you mentioned in another thread about collecting pictures, such as that nematode..and I think it is a great idea..

You could include other things like

pictures of-

IP poop
puffers with confirmed IPs
puffer bites
prolapse (or whatever it is called)
fin rot
and so on, you get the idea!

I am sure several members would be willing to donate their pictures!

Just a thought!!

Puffer's differences in internal structure are as big or or even bigger hit than their just being scaleless. There are a lot of scaleless fish in the hobby.

the modifications that allow for puffing mean that the GI tract is a lot more visible, which spooks some folks, and which changes some of the symptoms seen in several conditions.

Their retractile eyes also cause some questions, and reduce our ability to see into their eyes.

The physical differences from non-puffer fish also strongly affect the ways in which they swim. That alone modifies a lot of standard symptoms.

Even their color change abilities are stronger than many fish show, and may raise questions of what is normal and what is not along with in some cases making it easier to see mild or early symptoms in some conditions.

Great idea, that would be a major contribution. It is likely to be too big for an individual to undertake, but compiling a lot of existing data could likely be compiled just as the Pufferpedia info was originally.

I believe Poli was onto something like that. Great idea. I think it was a flow chart type for diagnosis.

PC, here are those pics you asked for. Please use any of them in any way you want. These pics were of a puffer that I purchased and placed in my QT, and they have previously been posted on this forum.

I didn't learn that my camera had a closeup setting before I took these pics or they would've been much nicer and I probably would've had many more. Oh well.
There are many knowledgeable fish keepers on this forum willing to help and give great advice...The advice is free; What you choose to do with it gives it value.

We do have a list started of a FAQ page with photos to illustrate common problems or questions, but someone needs to actually put it together and get it online ;)

Since we're more worried about finding time to get the site upgraded and running, its going to be on the back burner, but it is something we've been meaning to do for a while now.
