T Niphobles, puffer pedia, max size?
I notice that the puffer pedia lists a niphobles as 13" (33cm) yet the link to fishbase says 5.9" (15cm)
ug.php/v/PufferPedia/Marine/T_Niphobles/
I am wondering, why the difference? From my personal experience, my niphobles grew to about 5.5-6" and stopped growing, I had him for many years in full marine, and well fed. I know this is just one experience, but I am wondering where the 15" came from...

I agree with Mek0ng and am not aware of larger specimens either.

I have no idea who provided the info for each of our profiles to be honest guys, they were from before my time on the staff here
I'm guessing they meant 13cm, instead of inches, but we'll leave this thread up for a bit to see if anyone chimes in with any monster puffs of that species
The good news is the tech team finally has access to edit/update the Pufferpedia, which was really hindering us in changing and adding profiles.

FWIW, the Fishbase citation give the 15 cm length. But is a pretty sketchy entry - I would not bet the farm on it.

I'd bet it's a typo too.

Anyone have that aqualog puffer book by dr. ebert? Mine is currently in storage as I complete my home remodel, I think that might help to sort this out.

I can check, but half the time that one shows completely different species under the same name so its not foolproof either.
It says 15cm for Takifugu niphobles, brackish and tank requirement of 200-400 liters (50-100 gallons), seems like a lot of room for a 6" fish, but then again, they are marine so need more volume.. right?
Dang it, now that I have the book in front of me, it shows the red eye/red tails as irrubescos, and lortetis as not having the red tail! Which is it, because I want some dang irrubescos and the local store has red tail'ed puffers.. which are they? LOL

Lortetis have a blue edge to the male's tail.

I think I need a new reference book. I have Handbook of Aquarium Fishes by Axelrod and Schultz. Doesn't even list most puffers.....Mek0ng wrote:Anyone have that aqualog puffer book by dr. ebert? Mine is currently in storage as I complete my home remodel, I think that might help to sort this out.

I did all the puffer profiles for the Encyclopedia of Exotic Tropical Fishes by Axelrod & Scott. Those are probably correct... They wouldn't only let me include the more common ones though.
