New guy from illinois

Post by Headtrip »

Got my dwarf puffers last week. Have absolutely fallen for these little fellas.

I purchased 14 for my 60 gallon aquarium.

I had a bunch of other tropical fish in there and have since found homes for them.

I keep trying to locate 14 of them but have only found 10. I'm hoping my other 4 didn't fall victim to my other fish I had in there. But as we all know, they are little.

Anyways. I'm considering adding an additional 10 for a total of 20-24.

The 60 gallon tank is full of hiding places and plenty of space.

Anyways. Hello and I'll be poking my nose around looking up info on this nice forum you guys have here.

Luckily not Chicago! Lol

I'm south by Peoria in Galesburg.

It's about 3 hours to Chicago from me. Lucky you, you have some amazing aquariums in the area to get livestock and supplies. There's a small store in town where I am however the bigger stores with a lot of retail stock are at least an hour from me in Peoria or Davenport Iowa.

Cool, my parents have a vacation house in Kiawah. I agree, I've looked around just for fun and there are no good fish shops.

Just twigged you are planning on adding loads more. Not a good idea, you are pretty much stocked with what you have.

Not lots more. I have a total of 20 in there now. Also update the tank to drift wood, 3 Amazon plants, 2 lilies and a bunch of fern.

As well to support the live plants I added a global pro full spectrum 7500k 48" LED light bar. It's amazing how much the lighting makes a difference on seeing the tank. The kit came with 2 marineland t8 18" florescent lights.

That crayfish will probably kill your puffers, you should move it.

I actually have white and a red crawfish in there.

They don't seem to mind the fish (even when I had tropical ones in there before). They are lazy I guess. Never seen them really even try to catch a fish. I had a blue one before that actively ate fish (which for a convict chilid tank it was fine since they had babies almost every other week).

If they start trying to go after the puffers I will transfer them to my 10 gallon snail tank.

Okay, it's just that the puffers are small and slow so they are very easy prey. Try to keep an eye out for missing fish, but if you don't see anything wrong then I guess there's no problem.

Funny story.

Apparently when you posted my crawdads decided to go all carnivore and decided to eat my high fun banded shark that was chilling till spring. Always sucks have a $30 fish get eaten. :/

So the crawdads are permanently accompanying my snails in my 10 gallon snail tank.

:/ no puffers were harmed in this learning experience. Lol

Good that the little guys weren't hurt. And appropriate that the crawdads are in with the snails I always considered these guys food. Either for me or the puffs : P
