Hello From Chicago
Hello all!
Last weekend, I was buying fish for my school community tank. After getting my cory cat and some barbs, I saw the cutest little face staring back at me, a dwarf puffer. OMG it was love at first sight. So breaking the number one rule of pet keeping, don't buy a pet on an impulse, I bought the little guy. Once I got him home I realized I knew NOTHING about the little cutie.
Now I am setting up a twenty long, and getting it cycled while he waits in another tank.
I am already learning a lot from here about these picky little eater that like real plants. I have never had a picky eater fish and never had much success with live plants but I am willing to learn.
I look forward to meeting all of you!

Re: Hello From Chicago
Just get some Tetra Safestart to add to your 20g filter & the tank will be cycled for your puffer.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

I found them up at Natural Pet in Oak Park, right on Harlem.Pufferpunk wrote:Wht LFS did you go to? I'm in Franklin Park.
I started out with washed play sand and aquarium sand. I was trying to save some money. Unfortunately I didn't wash the play sand well enough because well ... we had a blizzard and I was doing it in the bathroom. So I am getting the tank clear from that first. I am filtering the water and getting some live plants today.

Is that the shop by Lake st? I like that one.
Add filter floss (pillow stuffing) to your filter, it'll polish the water.

Re: Hello From Chicago
Check. just got all the stuff and stuffed my little filter.
It is the one near Lake Street. Unfortunately I just moved to the south side and I can't find anything down here. I can get supplies at Pet Supplies Plus and Petco, but not fish. Although showing lack of self control in impulse buys maybe that is a good thing! My cute little $5 puffer fish has just topped $100 in additional supplies. LOL

Re: Hello From Chicago
Although I get good healthy fish from this store, I don't think they know very much about puffers. When I went back and asked what they were feeding them, I was told just sinking pellets. And they have them housed with community fish. Now they know about plants and I assume salt water, but I am pretty sure they are clueless about puffers.
