Rare puffers in Socal at Tongs Fountain V (Save em PLease!)

Post by KJB »

Sorry for the iphone pictures.

They had 3 Arrowhead puffers (Monotrete suvattii) and 10 Takifugu ocellatus.

I told the shopkeeper to remove the heater and feed them ghost shrimp and no fish at least. Damn I wish I had a nice rack of tanks to put em all in.

I feel bad for these guys too but I get that they have to contain them so they don't annihilate each other and everyone else.

I know... they are such great looking fish but the store just says they are tropical and blah blah blah. I tried to at least tell them and the one guy seemed to listen somewhat but I am not holding my breath. It really sucks to see something so amazing and know its on deaths door.

You could print out the article we have on them in the Library.

99% sure they won't do anything about it and that the fish will be sold by Saturday which is when I could go back.

This store has an epic selection but mixed standards on livestock health, they just turn and burn through livestock. On one weekend they must sell more fish then most places do in a month but I cannot buy anything they have. They use too many centralized tanks and often diseases can be seen all over the place. The fugu were in one of the centralized systems... at least the arrowhead weren't! You would be amazed at how many saltwater fish they have and kind of upset by how densely they house them. Plus many of them no responsible store would order. The only reason I went there is that my usual store was out of Seachem Garlic Guard and Nourish.

Well I guess it is Fugu season in Socal since I see them at two other stores now but they don't seem to be selling at all. This might be a good and bad thing. The good is that they may not be imported next time around as stores cannot move them but its sad for the few dedicated people who really want one. If you want one I see them for sale at 3.99 now, lets hope some dedicated people buy them.

I talked to one employee who actually has a Red Congo. He said they cannot move the three Arrowhead, the Fugu or the new Fahaka (19.99 about 3 inches and looks stressed). He makes sure they are properly fed at least (half shell clams and ghost shrimp, no gold fish) and has told people the requirements for having a puffer. Granted that is probably another reason why no one has bought them... He even said he got one guy to have a temperate Fugu tank which made me smile.
