Hemispherically correct circus flow

Post by Squaffy »

So... just had a plumber round to change some old radiator valves and we ended up having a rather bizarre conversation over coffee at Squaffy's tank (he has that effect on visitors, bless him).

Anyway, according to the plumber, the flow wasn't hemispherically correct. He explained the Coriolis effect, where water in the Northern hemisphere flows anti-clockwise, and the opposite in the Southern hemisphere, clockwise.

We decided to get wet, and re-jig the outflow to the other end of the tank, much to Squaffy's delight, and it now flows anti-clockwise.

Can't say there is a noticable difference, but in principle it makes sense to keep it this way.

Has anyone else ever heard of this? or even consciously does this?

Last time I checked, North America was still in the Northern hemisphere Bertie, anything south of the Equator is considered Southern hemisphere. Mind you, with the North Pole heading across Siberia, that may change in the future.

LOL! I have played with clockwise/counter-clockwise hemispheric currents in tanks, but the corolis forces involved are so tiny that they can be ignored in ordinary rectangular tanks. For one thing, those forces are so small that a single largish fish or a comparable mass school of smaller fish can and will overcome them and reverse the "passive" (read as:planent-positional) hemispheric flow. As almost all of my tanks have multiple pumps, fine-tuning flows has long been a major part of fine-tuning tanks in my house. Frankly, it is of purely academic interest, especially for puffer tanks where interrupted sight lines are a major factor in tank layouts.

Now if you want a fun challenge and have the skills (or budget) to custom-build tanks, try playing with Monaco-style tank configurations. These are five-sided (or more) tanks with near sidewalls which are invisible to the viewer. If nothing else these tanks eliminate the artificial "reflections" visible to the viewer but invisible to the fish. I love the Monaco invisible sidewall effect. They do make the tank appear to be a real slice out of a much larger water mass.

Tanks are not just about keeping wet pets.
