faulty protein skimmer?
faulty protein skimmer?
I have had a jewel rio 180l for about 8 months now and not once has it produced any foam into the collection cup! I have been told to wait for it to build up but I have one stars and stripes puffer (I'm only keeping it for a friend until august and I am aware that my tank will be too small, but at the moment the puffer is only a juvenile and is still small). I also have a maroon clownfish; I know they won't be giving off too much waste but 8 months seems a long time! Does anyone know how to get the skimmer to produce foam beause I have tried all sorts! Thank you

I've only read bad things about this Jewel skimmer. You'd be better off buying yourself a new skimmer.
Try and get a second hand 'Deltec MCE300 Protein Skimmer' for about £70 (they're £150 new). They are really good skimmers

Yep, cant beat a cpr bak pak. These these produce perfect amount of foam and nasty stuff in the collection cup or cups. I have an order model CPR Duel Bak Pak, double the skimming power. But if you got a small tank, then the single will work.

Re: faulty protein skimmer?
Ok, thank you, unfortunately the skimmer came with no instructions (only assembly stages) when I tried looking up instructions it turns out I have the 'older edition' skimmer I have been told to clean it out by one person and to let the 'sludge' build up by the guy who sold it to me. Is there any way I can get the skimmer to work because I do not know if I will be able to add another skimmer because it is only a marine converted tank so as far as I know there is only one skimmer that would fit the tank.? Is there a way to fix this problem or should I try to refund the item and possibly get this back pack?

Re: faulty protein skimmer?
Ok thank you, I will try to refund my current skimmer and get a backpac skimmer, the only problem is when I look the skimmer up there are so many different types and I do not know which one will be suitable for my tank, also the ones I have found are all for sale in $ when I need £Pufferpunk wrote:I'm really happy with my Backpac.

You got some of the best shops in England near you. Have you been to wildwoods?

Re: faulty protein skimmer?
Realy? thats great! as a matter of fact yes, it turns out I have been to one of their stores, however they only sold tropical there and many of the fish seemed to have bacteria and many were simply dead in there tanks. As good as the store may be, the employees knew nothing about the care of fish. But a place I did go to which was good was called milbrook water gardens and it sells live rock and marine fish. Another place I went to where I got my fish was great because it had so many different types of fish and new stock practicaly every week. The place was called Birchwood and it was outside maidstone; I plan on getting more fish and perhaps live rock from them.bertie 83 wrote:You got some of the best shops in England near you.
