Moonlights

Post by LEROY »

Has anyone tried to use regular 25watt lightbubls with a blue colour in place of moonlights. Will moonlights work well with puffers? are there any benefits? Any ideas would be helpful.
-Thanks, Steve.

I think a 25 watt would be a little bright for a moonlight. I rigged up two blue LEDs to a 12v power supply and used that for a bit. Unfortunately, I modded the LEDs into an old phone (that's right), and it never really fit properly on the tank, so I stopped using it.

I have some LED moonlights but I have never used them for puffer fish. I use them for my clowns to signify day and night to aid with breeding. I am sure they would be neat to have with a lurker/nocturnal puffer.

i have been looking into moonlighting and how much $$$ it is. this site helped out http://www.kaotica.com/frag/diy/moonlight/ i might try to make some ill post more if i can find the right LEDS at Radio Shack or my local computer store. :D

well i got everything to make the moon lights at radio shack here is my list

x4 -470nm Rectangular High Brightness Blue LEDs $1.75 each
x4 -1/4watt 100ohms resistors $.99 for a pack of 5
4.9v power source (old cell phone charger)
22 gauge wire $5 at radio shack or cut up an old Ethernet cable to save money :thumb:

I'll post some pics soon :D

here is a pic of the list of things not including the phone charger(power supply)
Image

top view i just used small tubes to cover each LED until i got a long enough tube to cover the entire cord

what the tank look like all BLUE(I'll get a better one at night) :D i think its not bad for around $10

This project only took me about 20 min. If you want to make the same thing i will try to help or answer any questions if you need it. you will really only need some soldering skills and know what your power source voltage is before you buy resistors. Here is the site i use to calculate what i needed http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz ( FYI diode forward voltage is usually 3.1 - 3.3 for blue LEDs )

How many leds do you have wired per resistors?
