Brackish to Freshwater

Post by pelle567 »

Is it possible to transition a tank including all decoration/substrate/media from BW to FW?

Yes just keep replacing your water with fresh, aim for a difference of no more than 0.002 per week and you will be fine. If you are thinking about changing from brackish to a completely acidic freshwater set up then I'd probably think about taking out all the water and giving the decor a good rinse before putting back in the tank

What do you have for live stock? What are you using for substrate? Are you planning on any live plants once back to freshwater?

It would help to know the background of this system & why you're doing this?

Sorry...for the delay.

I lost my approx 10 year old gsp 3 weeks ago. I have wanted a fahaka for years but kept my rule of 2 tanks (snail breeder and Polli's 58 gallon). I now have Wendell a 2 inch fahaka. I have had him for nearly a week, he is currently in a 20 long desimating the snail population while I am working on the process of bw to fw. He will only be in the 58 bowfront until November when I move to my new house 50 miles away. On order I have a custom tank from glasscages.com which will arrive at my new place. He's getting a 118 tall 36x24x31.

Obviously I have no interest in setting up this large tank more than once so wondering about the bw to fw transition. After November my 58 will be retired. (No intention for plants). I have aragonite substrate that is 10 years old plus many clam shells in the substrate.

Just wondering if the transition is both safe and possible.

PS I will do a complete tear down if I have to but with everything else going on I certainly would prefer not to have to do that. My refractormeter does not go lower than .020 so I ordered a pond sg meter that goes all the way down to 0.00. I will not make the transition until I am confident my levels are stable and safe.

I have been doing wc's and so far no bloom or evidence of recycle. The only population in the tank right now are livebearers as dither fish. Endler guppy crosses

Sorry about the loss of your GSP. That's a lot of memories w/ a fish companion. Also, congrats on your new Fahaka. Looking forward to see pics of the custom tank when it's ready and occupied. :)

My husband wld like a Fahaka someday. He really appreciates their beauty and personality. Hope to see some pics of your little guy in the near future. :)

REally, the teardown is best. What substrate? I would think with a GSP, it's argonite? I'd just start over, add Tetra Safestart & the fahaka.
