Feeding sand shrimp

Post by DMD123 »

I recently stopped by a new Bass Pro Shop that opened up in my area looking for a tub of nightcrawlers and found they carried live sand shrimp. These are a crunchy food but not as hard as a crayfish or crab. They are about 3 inchs long and apparently my puffer enjoys them since he has been ripping them to shreds and chowing down.

This is what they look like:

Just a reminder to think outside the box when it comes to feeding.

My tub said 12ct and cost came out to about $4. These are actually local to the area I live so that may be a reason they are not too expensive. The actual count in the tub had to have been much higher at about 15 to 18 count since I have been feeding both my puffer and Oscar and have way more left than I should.

Its been a bit of a challenge to find crunchy foods in my area. I would love to use crayfish but there are some strict rules on harvesting due to invasive crays being in our area. You have no limits on invasive crays but you must kill them before they are transported. That does not help me with a live food to feed the puffer. Also the self cloning cray would be a great one but again illegal in my state. So to find something like this available is pretty much better than my other options. I also use whole shrimp in shell with the head attached but the puffer only like to eat the head and guts out and leaves the tail. These Sand shrimp are better sized and he will eat the whole thing.

Alot of the crays i find are far to large for my puffer and alot goes to waste. And just recently there has been a huge shortage in my area due to an isssue with the farms in florida. Ill have to look out for these sand shrimp.
