Still cichlid (for now). My little red Isletas is super spunky for its size and has all the puffer like attitude. But the calmness and wisdom in my pearsei's eyes when he looks at you still cant be beat.Pufferpunk wrote:DMD123, Now that you have a puffer in your collection, what's your vote?

When we first started fish-keeping, we had a tank of cichilds. I wasn`t keen on them, though pufferghoti was. I found them to be highly terrortorial and aggressive. Though that may have been because we made a rookie mistake of keeping several species in too small a tank.

We used to have a1000l tank, heavily planted, soft water with over 200 neon tetras and a few small cat fish until some-one suggested adding a few SAPs to it. It's surprising how long it takes before you notice your shoal is slowly desreasing in numer.hadla wrote:Lol I'd love a huge tank just for a school of fish, but I couldn't stick with one species and I'd rather have a puff in it lol

When we first got the mbu I showed the children what sort of damage it's teeth could do to a whole mussel. That was enought to persuade them not to put thier hands into a tank or to allow any of thier friends to do so either.
I've found smaller puffers are just as likely to snap at a passing finger and that hurts enough that I wouldn't want to test my body size vs bite damage ratio theory on one of my bigger puffers.

Re: Poll / Best personality - Puffer vs. Cichlid
I thought that hairy puffers were pretty inactive and didn't move much. I don't know for definite as I haven't kept one but they're not a great candidate to show off the personality of a puffer. A porcupine puffer on the other hand would be perfect to show this. (Sorry to all lurker puffer keepers, I'm sure I'll be shot down on this)

Pig's pretty active, whether or not he stays active as he matures, I don't know. I hope so, I love my funny little puffer guy

Re: Poll / Best personality - Puffer vs. Cichlid
My first lurker was a Palembang's, and I fell for it almost as quickly as the active critters. Lurkers can move fast for short distances, but they will never be F-8s or GSPs. They do not need to be. Mature GSPs and F-8s and such do spend a good bit of time resting and dozing, but when they get hungry, they do respond to their keeper. They are active beggars, the lurkers are not nearly as active. F-8s and Saps stay pretty active for years, but in their teens are much less so than when they were immature. Owner recognition and active begging really are the most striking in immature fish, but big GSPs can still make a mess with water. Adult T.mbu probably should not be kept by hobbyists - way too big.

Re: Poll / Best personality - Puffer vs. Cichlid
I started with ciclids and was not impressed. One day I bought a little GSP from walmart for five bucks and fell in love. Now he is in a 65 gallon reef tank, and I also have recently acquired a 72 gallon bow front reef tank with a 2 to 2 1/2 foot zebra moray eel which is super tame since the previous owner hand raised him. You guys think I might be able to let them get along since the eel is so tame? I hand feed him and he doesn't bother the snowflake clowns at all.
65g reef with GSP,sleepy head goby, and a small snowflake eel. Some small corals also
72g bowfront reef with a pair of clowns, 2 1/2foot zebra moray eel, another 2 1/4foot Zebra moray eel, and a blue chromis. Some large corals also.

NIMFT = Not in my fish tanks. The core of the Earth will freeze before I hand-feed any predatory fish. I am attached to and quite fond of my fingers. That is Darwin award territory IMHO.

Re: Poll / Best personality - Puffer vs. Cichlid
After keeping puffers and cichlids my vote stays with puffers. Cichlids do show personality but puffers just add attitude into the mix, never found a cichlid that wants to fight me but many puffers do lol
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

Re: Poll / Best personality - Puffer vs. Cichlid
I used to have a big midas cichlid that would attack me on occasion. That really did not make me feel the fish had any personality just that he was in breeding mode and was super territorial at the time. The personality really showed when he would come to me when I approached the tank and interacted and would ignore others. Or when I sat at either end of the tank on the sofa or chair he would hang out on the same side just watching me. So far my little puffer is showing a lot of personality despite being so new that I could be turned to vote puffer but my cichlids still win for now.bertie 83 wrote:After keeping puffers and cichlids my vote stays with puffers.
