Quarantine Live food?

Hi,
So, my fahaka is ~6" right now. Big/small enough that I think snails, or small fiddler crabs, would be a good food for him, but I would have to get them from the LFS.
How long would you quarantine snails? Do those of you who feed live shellfish/crustaceans have a quarantine or treatment procedure to make sure nothing undesirable is being added to your tank? Honestly - I can tell when a fish isn't doing well, but with shellfish, crustaceans, unless they were growing a visible fungus, or something, I probably wouldn't know anything was wrong until it was dead.
Mainly curious because my local grocery store has such a crap selection of seafood, and I'm somewhat out in the sticks. I've been feeding shrimp, and pieces of snow crab leg from the grocery store. Our grocery does get in fresh, live mussels, but they're waaaay too big right now. that might be a good food for adult fahaka, but not at 6".
THX.
