if in a single tank, that is also key. you want the power heads pointing in one direction with the intakes at the opposite.

I did this using black hose (I forgot the name) but it is here on the forum some where. What you are doing is creating a uni directional flow. From one end of the tank (outlet) to the other (inlet). Modified HOBs are allowed but a power head combo, with a quality canister filter is best.
