Winter!

Post by RTR »

We are gettiing another snow today, ATM they say 7-11". I keep saying I do not want to move again, but this winter has just been awful. I want to go into hibernation or go to the tropics until spring... I am too old and cranky for this anymore!

We bought a bike trailer & will be investigating southern places to move to. The tanks have kept me doing this--it's gonna be a nightmare!

We are up our (unprintable) in snow, with wind and absurdly low wind chill levels. This is no way to live. If we become snow birds it means no tanks, which I am not ready to do yet. It will not be long until my wife retires, and I know she and her niece will want to travel more (relatively easy from here)) but care-givers for me could be an issue as well. Getting old is a PITA.

The west and south decks are half full of snow (rebuilt last year so weight is not an issue). The world is white and looks good from here, but getting out is an issue - front door is the only way and the drives are waiting for clearing (not by us...). We are spoiled and indecisive.

I'm sure there would be plenty of foreigners who would love to care for you while the wife travels. ;)

I suppose that I have to admit that I am spoiled rotten. I also have multiple physical issue and too many physicians. Just keeping up with my doctors and therapists is not a small chore. I have a front-of the-eye doctor and a back-of-the-eye doctor locally, plus the low-vision specialist (in Baltimore) and one custom glasses person in the next county and another here in tow (different specialists!), plus my PT folks who try to keep me at least semi-mobile so long as the world is not white, which it is at the moment. I think the wind chill is still slightly positive but I have no more appointments this week. My computer is acting up - the keyboard may be going.

Life is just a bowl of (frozen) cherries! At least there is no dog visiting this week. And San the Banana Man got the bed cleaned and fed before the snows and single digit temperatures hit. The snow actually helps there - it helps insulate.

In our part of Quebec, we have had nearly a week of +3-4C temps after you got the Polar Vortex which didn't really affect us at all. This week we have had -30C overnight for 4 days but to be honest it's been a tad milder than normal..

Guess we just hit it lucky for a change..

We have a good friend who lives only 5+ minutes away. His property is a bit lower elevation than ours, but in similar wind profiles usually. He got almost no snow and is still clear. We got hit hard, and nothing has melted at all - it just rearranges a bit on the property, which remains fully covered. The two decks which were above knee deep have lost a lot due to high winds, and the one deck which got little now has as much as the other two deck - most likely blow-down from the roof. It is a bit warmer now, but we still have not made above freezing in quite some time, and have had wind chills below 0 F routinely. Sometimes you pay more for the view... The schools have used up all their snow days - any more and they start cutting into spring break or add on at the end of the year - both highly unpopular options.

As a Chicago native who has been displaced by the cold/snow/taxes, I have to say that winters are pretty mild here in Louisville. We just don't get a lot of snow. I'd say no more than 5 inches all season (Chi-town gets about that much per serving) and the temps rarely dip below 20 F.

This winter, though, is probably an exception everywhere. Even here we're seeing temps near 0 degrees and significantly more "snowstorms" that dump 2-3 inches across the area. (That's what the locals call them, anyway. Way I see it, if I can still drive a Mustang through it, it ain't a snowstorm.)

Anyway... I'm ready for Spring. I just hope this extra cold winter doesn't mean that summer is going to be extra hot.

For me the big question is whether or not the Banana bed survives the winter. It got tucked in foe the minter properly and before the ultra-low temps hit, but we do not see these exrta-low temps ordinarily.

hAve Sam or some one continue to mound the snow up around the bananas for extra insulation. If you loose some of the upper \at least you might preserve the roots and in the long run the plants. Good luck your banana grove is truly a beautiful set up.
