So, that's why they call it an overflow!
Changed water today. Learn from what I did, be specific! I mix SW in a large bin on the second floor of my house so I'm close to my brackish tanks and then I use a long hose and gravity to get water to the big marine tank on the first floor. This is a two person job, me up stairs and my wife downstairs making sure the hose doesn't come out of the water. I use the overflows as a gauge to then I should stop filling, when it gets to the grating on the overflows, I let a little flow in to the overflows, and then stop filling and all is well. Today I kept asking the wife, "Is it at the overflows?" Reply, "No, Honey, it's not there yet!" Well, she must have been distracted and thought I meant the top of the overflows....water was pouring down in to the sump, and spilling out through the back of the stand and in to the dining room where she couldn't see it. After a while I got this sinking feeling and it dawned on me that we removed 40 gallons and I was coming up a 55 gallons added.
I figured out how the overflow got it's name now.

We have all been there and done that.
I only move water on the same floor, with pumps. Plus - by hard lessons - I have a remote switch in my right hand and never, ever put it down will the power is ON. But I have still over-filled tanks. I am considering alarms. It is perfectly possible for me to space out with a switch in one hand and a coffee cup in the other.
My wife is a very smart lady. she declines to learn anything whatsoever about tank operations or feeding. Marriage preservation trumps a tank helper anytime. I do know better than to tackle City Hall. My messes are just that, mine.

Double post? I didn't see any double post! Anyone else see a double post?

Well, I think that some noticed, but compared to an overflow, it is an easy mess to clean up...
