Re: New to puffers - feed dwarf puffers snails only?

I think the bigger issue is all the other fish you'll be asking the DPs to coexist with. DPs have a reputation of being fine with other species ... until they're not. As juveniles, they'll probably be fine, but I would expect some carnage when they mature. :(

Re: Colomesus asellus and Figure 8

I wouldn't consider 40 gallons to be adequate room for 3 South American puffers alone, either. They really do swim a LOT!

Certainly sounds more than adequate. If his stomach remains gently rounded and is not concave, you're feeding a good amount.

Re: Figure 8 puffers

No problems here keeping two together either. In fact, they squabbled less than my DPs. Bumblebee gobies can be great tankmates. I had balloon mollies with mine, which worked fine for a long time ... until it didn't. They were eventually eaten. :( In terms of sociability with their humans, I found D...

Re: Fat Indian dwarf puffer( I think)

You might have a male and a female. Females are rounder than males, sometimes dramatically so. The DP in my avatar is a female after eating a ton of live blackworms, who released a bunch of eggs the very next day. Do you know what sexes you have? This forum has a great article on sexing dwarf puffer...

My 29 gallon F8 tank with tiki theme. Aragonite sand, Texas holey rock, and various kitschy ornaments. Bubbler was short-lived, as the salt spatter was a PITA to clean up.

Re: Tricks to feeding bloodworms to DP?

Cone feeder is great for feeding live worms, but not so great for frozen/thawed. ;) Assuming these are frozen/thawed you're asking about, then turning off or unplugging the filter at feeding time can be helpful. You can also feed one worm at a time as the DP eats them, which, while time-consuming, i...

Re: Need tips for feeding Pea Puffers

Live blackworms are the food of choice for my DPs, too. But be warned: Once you feed them live worms, they may never accept thawed frozen stuff again. ;) Blackworms are inexpensive and relatively easy to find (most independent LFS carry them). You can keep them alive for several weeks in the refrige...

Re: Breeding Dwarf Puffers

It would be handy if the puffer owners who have bred them could post their water parameters please? Even if it is just the pH and temperature. Also whether their DP's are more likely to spawn immediately after a water change and whether the water change water is cooler than the tank water or not. :...

More interesting for US, yes. For them, I maintain that it's more stressful.

Re: Dwarf puffer tank mates!

Big fan of species-only tanks here. I have DPs with DPs, and fancy goldfish with fancy goldfish. I think it's less stressful than trying to force them to co-exist with entirely different species. Just my two cents though. ;)

Re: DP diet?

Thank you! Are adult brine shrimp any good? I hear they don't have much nutritional value but I don't really know As Bertie said, nutritional value is low, but it's SO FUN to watch them chase and eat live BS! I buy them once in a while for a few days of treats. Otherwise, live blackworms are our st...

Re: Step One for Dwarf Puffer Setup (w/ picture)

Have a 29g tank so I think I feel good about having 4 in there. I had 4 in a 29 gallon as juveniles, but unfortunately wound up with the wrong ratio of males to females as they matured (3 males, 1 female, yikes!). Had to return two males that were fighting incessantly, and kept the one male and one...

Re: Dwarf Puffer Planted Tank Newbie Chcklist

I wouldn't do, as you're planning, 2-3 DPs, plus cherry shrimp, plus Otos. WAY too much bioload for a tank that size.

I'd have one DP in a 10 gallon tank. Two if I could guarantee a M/F or F/F combo. And that's it. :)

Re: Breeding Dwarf Puffers

So they will breed fine in the water they are already comfortable in?? And what should the tank setup be for the eggs and fry? Keep the adults with the eggs if possible, as they like to "fan" the eggs with their tails and guard them. I don't know why they do this, but I personally think i...
