Re: Can DP 'puff'?

I've seen one of my DPs puff... Two of the little girls were fighting and one latched onto the side of the smaller. The smaller puffed up into a little marble, but they continued to swim around in circles until I got my hand down in the tank and scared them off. The little one has a small scar on he...

Re: algae eaters with F8s

I love black mollies! I keep a pair of girls with my F8... Pufferpunk is totally right; they don't clean diatoms, but they keep all the other algae in my tank under control. (Diatoms are why they made those magnetic scrapers... hehe.) Just be sure to give them some veggie foods once in a while... mo...

Re: TPF Needs Tech Help

I'm not a perfect fit for what you're looking for, but my day job is as Unix/Linux sysadmin. I have lots of Perl programming experience and some c and c++. I do lots of work with open source web products, but never with phpbb in particular. It looks like I could pick it up with a little time, but I'...

Re: porc?burrfish... difference?

My LFS got the specimen I just purchased when they ordered a "porcupine fish." They usually get, as expected, a Diodon holocanthus. They mentioned that this happens from time to time, but rarely. They never actually order burrfish specifically, and this is only the second one they've gotte...

Feeding miurus silversides?

Okay, my congo is like the pickiest eater of all my puffers. Heck, of all my fish. He will eat bloodworms, some livebearers (don't worry, I raised them myself), and maybe a snail or two... but there are tons of ramshorns cruising all over his tank so I'm not even sure about the snails. I'm tricked h...

Re: porc?burrfish... difference?

Nope, and shorter spines. More like a porcupine puffer having a bad hair day. I think they are different species. After much poking on fishbase and WWM, I believe mine is a Cyclichthys orbicularis, which is one of the puffers on my "dream puffers" list. (He is also the messiest eater I've ...

Here's some resources to help study up on these cute critters: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/diodontpuffers.htm http://www.fishbase.org/NomenClature/ScientificNameSearchList.php?crit1_fieldname=SYNONYMS.SynGenus&crit1_fieldtype=CHAR&crit1_operator=EQUAL&crit1_value=Cyclichthys&crit2_fie...

Any snail that is tiny and is not an Malaysian Trumpet snail (they look like pointy ice cream cones). This gave me a good laugh! (And is still so accurate!) BTW, I like your sig! My email sig is similar (although the langauge is a bit more archaic): "I care not for a man's religion whose dog a...

Try starting with a small frag and see how your puffer does with it.

I agree with Phaedrus, you don't need really anything else, but I do like having a filter for mechanical and chemical (polyfilter and purigen). My ceylon tank has a skimmer, a large powerhead, lots of LR, and an AquaClear 70. If you have a sump you could do any other filtering there. I'm also a huge...

If you can QT them, I would.

They may be getting out competed for food. (Mollies can be very pushy at mealtimes.) If the little bloke's fins are torn up, he may be getting picked on... some alone time might be just the thing, but I'd keep an eye on all your guppies.

I have had good luck with black mollies and BB gobies as roommates for my F8... but I still check fins for nipping every day.

So far (two years now) things have worked okay, but I'm always ready if things go bad someday. I've become a fan of the "puffer-by-themselves" school of thought.

Oh yeah... I'm also having luck in both tanks with turbo snails! I always make sure they are a variety with a small foot, and haven't lost any after two or three months. My ceylon leaves hermits alone, but my GSP is relentless in eating any hermit I put in the tank... no matter how much camouflage I...

I've also had some luck with my GSP and Ceylon puffer and soft corals. So far, I have mushrooms (several different types), Zoanthids, green star polyps, xenia, and several types of macro algae (in the display since these tanks do not yet have a sump/fuge). They've nipped the Gracilaria but have othe...
