Re: Oral Abscess?
That's what I thought. There's been no real change but at least it's not worse. He doesn't have an appetite but gill function is normal and he's moving around.

Re: Oral Abscess?
It's just swollen. I thought maybe a piece of snail shell could be stuck, but I couldn't find anything. The teeth seem fine as well, the abscess appears to be in front of the teeth. I was able to trim the teeth in that area without issue. If I add Epsom salt, how long do I leave it in for?

Re: Oral Abscess?
Here's another picture. I did sedate him. I did a teeth trimming while I was in there. The abscess does not appear to be related to the teeth, and seems to be in front of it. Pictures are from after the trimming.

Re: New tank, debating on fish/plants...
F8s would work. I keep driftwood in my brackish tanks, though the salinity is closer to 1.003 on average. When the wood gets a little fuzzy, I take an old soft bristle toothbrush and clean the wood in the utility sink. I use a mix of laterite, aragonite, and sand for my substrate and the pH stays at...

Re: New tank, debating on fish/plants...
I think the Irrubescos can be a bit unpredictable when it comes to temperament, some mild mannered while others are aggressive. The odds of assembling a trio or quartet with compatible or even tolerable personalities could be pretty low. All of my DPs love to hunt down their food. Some will eat the ...

Re: Curious Keyhole Behavior
I hadn't thought of Cichlid societies, that's a great idea! I did bring about thirty of the little keyholes to a LFS. I have a good relationship with the owner and he always has numerous extra tanks up and running in the store's basement, so I was able to set them up in a 55 gallon. I've only seen k...

Curious Keyhole Behavior
I have a pair of Keyhole Cichlids who (thankfully) took a two and a half month hiatus from breeding while raising their 75 children. Today I saw the female depositing about two dozen eggs on some driftwood. When I checked the tank ten minutes later, the eggs on the driftwood were gone and she was de...

Pics of Zeppelin the Turgidus
Here are a few recent pictures of Zeppelin. The first two are a little blurry. I was both panicked and excited when I saw him fully inflated. I quickly snapped the pictures and then thrust my hand into the tank, in the event I would have to help Zeppelin deflate. Of course I over reacted and he was ...

Re: New Puffer - Monotrete Turgidus !
Curse my wretched job and all the free time it steals from me :x Congratulations! He's adorable! It took my Zeppelin a full month to look that nice after the stress of being at the LFS. He has some driftwood in his tank that he likes to lounge on and hide under. I'll post some pictures in a new thre...

Re: Need help to identify my puffer
She is a tough puffer! She's lucky she didn't loose that eye. When I got my Turgidus he had a bite mark at the base of his caudal fin. I treated with Melafix and clean water and within a couple of weeks he was healed. I make my own Melafix or "Melafake" using water soluble tea tree oil and...
