I am certainly not the expert here, but it might help if you can provide a little more information.
Does he seem healthy and is he eating? Just shy? I think adding some mollies would be worth a try if you have the room. How big is your tank and how long have these guys been together?

Re: GSP has become shy
Gwen, I've been able to take the mollies back to our local fish store. They were the ones that suggested it, and were happy to take the fish back from us. If they do agree to take them back, just make sure you tell them they were kept in a brackish tank so they can properly house them. And yes, moll...

Re: GSP has become shy
I agree Bertie. One interesting thing that I heard from our LFS owner was that the more intelligent a fish is, the more likely they are to fall into some sort of problem like we had. Is there such a thing as a fish psychologist? lol.

Re: GSP has become shy
I wanted to post an update to this issue in case anyone else has to deal with this. Removing the dinosaur did not solve the problem. He was still shy and hid from us. An idea was presented to add some tankmates to make him feel comfortable and that everything was cool. I know, tankmates are largely ...

Re: GSP has become shy
We are making progress! The dinosaur is gone and Floyd is already showing signs of improvement. He's still shy, but not as bad as he was. He seems to be eating better and exploring his tank more. Hopefully he'll come up front to eat again too. For now we're still dropping his food near his favorite ...

Re: GSP has become shy
Thanks for all of your replies! My wife and I just worry about the little guy. I've never kept such a smart, sensitive fish. We will take the dinosaur out the next water change (tomorrow). This little guy is so cool, and totally worth all of the effort.

Re: GSP has become shy
I did stop the dinosaur bubbling, i was thinking the same thing. The specific gravity of the tank is 1.010. I like your idea on adding more decor, but we do have quite a bit already. I guess we'll just wait and see. Thanks for your replies!

GSP has become shy
We have a young GSP named Floyd in a 27 gallon brackish tank. The tank is over a month old, cycled and the water is testing within acceptable limits. (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, less than 10 nitrate). We're doing 25% water changes ever 4 days or so. We've had Floyd for about 2 weeks. He adapted to his ho...

Re: New GSP Tank
I wish I had cycled it as a freshwater now. I'm almost thinking about starting over with fresh, this ammonia method with questionable bacteria (i.e. did those on the sponge filter from the lfs store survive the transition?) has got me wondering. So far the ammonia drop has been very small over a 24-...

Re: New GSP Tank
The fish is in BW at the shop, at 1.010. The cycling is going slow, and yes I understand patience is important. I've been keeping fish in one form or another for over 30 years. You would think I'd have a better grasp on the nitogen cycle by now! I've had freshwater tanks continually operating for so...

Re: New GSP Tank
Okay, thank you. One more question. Can I use media from my freshwater tank if I drip acclimate it?

Re: New GSP Tank
Thank you for your replies, I missed that article. I can get some gravel from an established brackish tank. I was surprised to hear how long it takes. I was told the tank would cycle in a week or so just by adding an established bacteria colony. I can see now that you would need to add the ammonia t...

Re: New GSP Tank
We will upgrade the tank eventually, but everything we read said around 30 gallons was enough for a single GSP. I can see how it would seem crowded when he's the size of a pop can. As for the ammonia, wish that was something I would have read earlier. I read everything I could about cycling, and nev...

New GSP Tank
Hi everyone, this is my first post. Great website, excellent info! We have been reading a lot and my wife and I are very excited about getting a little GSP. We've set up a new 27 gallon cube as a brackish setup (1.010), with the intent to eventually move to full marine. We've done a lot of research ...
