Re: Clearing internal parasites from a Fig8

Ok. I'll give the garlic a try first before anything else. While I don't have the aquarium-use "garlic juice" anymore since my bottle expired years ago, I plan to mix in a teeny amount of minced garlic in with the cube as it thaws (along with the meds). This fish will willingly eat flake f...

Re: Clearing internal parasites from a Fig8

Thanks again. :)

One last question: If I can't get the puffer to eat the treated food (I've never had much luck with garlic juice in the past), would force feeding be an option?

I would think using a small syringe w/ a blunt tip would do the job. Of course I've never tried that before.

Re: Clearing internal parasites from a Fig8

Thanks PP! About how much food can one tablet treat?

I imagine frozen bloodworms are still the food of choice for this?

Clearing internal parasites from a Fig8

Hello everyone!

One of my Fig8s has a case of IPs. What is the current method of treating them?

I know in the past soaking their food in a medication was considered best practice, but it's been a long time, and I don't know what meds to use/are available.

Can someone please give me some pointers?

Re: "No Pest Strip" in a room with fish?

I'm pretty vigilant (and the puffers are VERY vigilant) about not letting crickets escape. The trick is to not put more than one per fish in the tank and only while the puffs are paying attention. If you accidentally dump out more than you want you can either grab up the crickets before the puffs ge...

Re: "No Pest Strip" in a room with fish?

I've been feeding my puffs nothing crunchier than crickets for over a year now and their teeth are just below the lip line. In fact because the crickets are easier for them to fit in their mouth I almost seems as though their teeth are better now than they were when they mostly ate ramshorn snails.

Re: "No Pest Strip" in a room with fish?

Crickets are their staple. I also occasionally feed them blood worms once a week.

The crickets are fed a tropical fish flake high in vitamin C. They should have plenty of nutrients, and are crunchy enough to keep the puffs' teeth in check.

Re: "No Pest Strip" in a room with fish?

It works by giving off fumes. Also, my apartment is kept pretty cool and dry. I cant say the same for the crawlspace above me and wall cavities, though. J-P, why cant you keep crickets? I used to breed snails when I lived with my parents but they do terrible in the water here. Not to mention the sme...

Re: "No Pest Strip" in a room with fish?

I wouldnt try it. Better safe then sorry. would the caulking like bait pesticide not work? Baits only work when used in attics/crawl spaces with silverfish, based on my reading. Since they mostly live in crawl spaces and in walls there is little I can do which will keep them out of my apartment. Wh...

"No Pest Strip" in a room with fish?

My apartment is under a constant invasion of silverfish, and after berating the apartment maintenance staff over properly dusting the building, I realize I am left to my own devices. I recently bought one of those Hot Shot brand "No Pest Strips" from Walmart to try and remedy the situation...

Yes, I've used oranges in the past. Just have to make sure they don't dry out.

Re: Cricket (s) Anyone?

Since moving the water around here has made it very difficult to breed snails like I used to, so I moved to crickets as a staple food source for my puffers. I feed them the same tropical fish flake I used to feed the snails (which they do seem to like a whole lot based on what I've seen) and give th...

Looks just like how both my fig-8s were when I first brought them home. With care, his tail will grow back.

What are you using to measure the SG? A refractometer or hydrometer?

Re: REALLY soft water is REALLY bad for snails! HELP!

I suppose thats an option. Although at this point I may as well see what happens with my current water situation. I have no idea how long it takes them to re-up the water softener after it goes out. Once they do refill it though, it'd be nice of them to not soften it so damn much. Seriously, the wat...

Re: REALLY soft water is REALLY bad for snails! HELP!

I could, but that would rule out the "snail bucket stinks, time to change its water before the guests arrive" spur of the moment thing I've always done in the past. :) If I could find a cheap source of powdered calcium carbonate that would be perfect since thats what usually makes water &q...
